£1.40 Conference Round-Up

Yesterday was the £1.40 Conference at Reuters in London – it was a big get-together of journalists and tech industry people to try to figure out the “future of news”, and was also raising money for the DEC Indonesian Earthquake appeal. As you might imagine, we were pretty excited – not only is ipadio a great tool for getting news out there fast, but we’ve been working with one of the organisations involved in the Earthquake relief effort, the Red Cross.

Since the earthquake struck, they’ve been using ipadio to update us with the latest on what is happening on the ground – something that can only really be done with ipadio. The comparison is rather stark – the delegates yesterday might have had 3G, WiFi, and lots of expensive computer equipment in the shadow of Canary Wharf, but out in Sumatra after an earthquake, all the Red Cross have are satellite telephones – though thanks to ipadio, they’re able to broadcast live updates and get the latest news out immediately.

The conference discussion was interesting, and I met lots of great people. It was styled an an “unconference” and took the form of lots of small group discussions on topics such as whether social media can “curate” news and “the psychology of Twitter”… and not to mention the passionate argument on my table over the impact of social media on politics!

So it turned out that guessing the future of news is tricky business – though this didn’t stop me from asking Jamie Sport from the Red Cross and my colleague Giles what they think!
