Hyperlocal journalism with ipadio?
I must confess, I’m a bit of a journalism junkie, so I was delighted to discover this morning a project that is proving Jeff Jarvis right – that ‘hyperlocal’ journalism may well be the future of local reporting. ‘Hyperlocal’ is the idea that ultra-local websites for communities will take the place of traditional local journalists, and that small groups will collaborate to broadcast to a smaller catchment area than any newspaper would find sustainable… and this has only been made possible thanks to advances in technology.
ipadio seems to me like a natural fit for this type of reporting – all you need to broadcast live from the scene of a news event is a phone, so it empowers everyone to be a journalist – and this is why I’m excited about what Hursley Village Information are doing. They’re going to be using ipadio to speed up the reporting of village news and events.

What’s interesting about this is that Hursley, in Hampshire, isn’t a big place – it only has a population of 800 – yet ipadio gives locals the tools they need to report as quickly and effectively as “big media” – without the need for millions of pounds and satellite trucks!
I can’t wait to see how they use ipadio – but I’ll be sure to report back on the ipadio blog when they do!
